Adventure

After a couple of years of adventure travel and a lot of change, I’ve had the opportunity to perform again and it is so fun to get back into it! I love how life works – too it is so unexpected and when you wish for something it can come about in such unexpected ways!  Early this year, I was invited to a Women of Calypso concert and I went by myself which is certainly unusual!  After arriving I settled at a table and ended up talking to a nice fella who was also there by himself and we started up a nice conversation and then sat together during the show.  As it turned out he was a musician and since I love live music, I gave him my contact info and he told me he’d let me know if he had any shows!

After a month or two he emailed me and I decided to go to a house concert at the Lumber Baron Mansion in Denver.  I had a great time (they were great) and I just happened to be chatting with the owner of the place when he mentioned that a bunch of magicians were performing upstairs.  I used to know a lot of the Denver magicians from performing burlesque with them and before I knew it I’d given Walter (the owner of the mansion) my contact info.  Soon enough I was performing in a one-off variety show as a burlesquer.  It went well and they asked me back and also asked me to perform in their murder mysteries, which is amazing because I was able to write original music to perform.  So here we are and I’ve been cast in a murder mystery and a series of variety shows without having to audition – yay!!  I love that I am now part of a professional show in such a funny, happenstance sort of way!

Screen time

Through the Lumber Baron, I connected with an actor who is lovely named Darrin and he knows a lot of people in video production and it just so happened shortly after I met him that he and his buddies were participating in the 48 hour film festival.  If you have never heard of the festival, it is a festival in which filmmaking teams have 48 hours to write, film, and edit a project with a few unexpected assignments – you don’t know the genre, there is a character you have to include somehow, and a line of dialogue that everyone must include.  As it turns out, the actress that was slotted to work with these fellas backed out at the last minute so here is the film I had the opportunity to perform in that weekend.  We shot Friday into the night until 2 in the morning on Saturday, on Saturday until 2 am and then were filming again on Sunday morning at 9.  It was a great time!  Here’s a link to the final short film:

Another funny turn of events had me acting in the short film “Dead Ringer.” I went to a film meet up and they were reading the script for a short film was in the preproduction stage.  There were several voice-over only parts in the script so I approached the producers and inquired about auditions and funnily enough they thought I was talking about a male hired killer part (the lead).  So in a strange turn of events I ended up auditioning for the role of a hired killer that was written as a man and while all the others auditioning were men!  They did end up casting a guy but then a small dancing part was written in and rather than auditioning for it, I was cast.  So started my journey!  And now I am in the Internet Movie database  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4713568/ which is awesome and I was able to work with some stellar talent.  One of those involved in the production of the film has an academy award!

I am also performing regularly with a burlesque troupe in Denver which has been great and again I never auditioned and everything just fell in my lap.  I have to thank all of my angels for their help with getting back into all of this without trying!  If you want to stay in touch with me and my work you can friend me on facebook under Laura Powers or under Dewliscious for burlesque.

Life is an adventure in so many ways!
